Remission Pills is a combination of three traditional formulas: Minor Bupleurum Combination (Xiao Chaihu Tang) to harmonise liver and spleen, Rehmania Six Formula (Liuwei Dihuang Wan) to nourish liver and kidney yin, and Persica and Carthamus Combination (Tao Hong Siwu Tang), to nourish and vitalise blood. This combination addresses syndromes that affect persons with chronic diseases, and particularly those diseases marked by periods of relatively little symptomatic activity followed by periods of inflammation and flare-up. Fundamentally, this is a harmonising formula for the liver and spleen. Nourishing the liver, with tang-kuei, peony, cnidium, rehmannia, and cornus, helps alleviate qi stagnation and erratic qi that disturbs the digestive and immune systems. The liver is relaxed and cooled by bupleurum, scute, and moutan. Weakness of the spleen system may contribute to the blood and yin deficiency; this is addressed by ginseng, ginger, licorice, jujube, pinellia, hoelen, alisma, and dioscorea, which invigorate the stomach, enhance spleen function, and eliminate stagnated dampness. Persica, carthamus, tang-kuei, peony, and cnidium assure that static blood associated with inflammatory disorders is removed. The formula is similar to one recommended in China for preventing recurrence of multiple sclerosis attacks. Remission Tablets can serve as a middle-age anti-stress formula, addressing the syndromes that frequently arise at that time of life, namely liver stagnation from stressful situations, digestive disturbance from poor eating habits, and the combination of weakening yin and development of gradual blood stasis associated with aging.
